Thank You Message from Claudio ( Rotary President)
once more thank you so muh for your help to support the Respirator project.
At the moment I am on the way back from Cambodia and in a couple of days I will be able to release all the photographs in my possession for the press release on the Second Hand Sale day, so successfull for the hard work of the WBN and all the Rotarians and friends of Rotary which has been there!
GIFT DRIVE and 'kids party' poster
Hi,
we are thrilled to support Samui Ex-Pats Christmas project. This is an e-mail from Linda 1st October......
We just learned AIS is generously sponsoring a 15,000 baht donation of purchased new books – thank you! They are also helping with small gifts and with staff volunteer help at the parties. The book donation is wonderful as very few books in the new library, especially at Wat Boon Tarik (WBT).
The next stage is the donating of children’s gifts and funds to purchase gifts. This is critically important as we must receive, collect and organise donations/gifts to cover wrapped gifts, by age group and gender, for 350 students!
We will soon initiate the major ‘Kids Party’ GIFT DONATION DRIVE. The first step is to request each of you to post, and distribute through your own lists, the attached poster requesting children’s gift donations (or cash donation to purchase gifts). All the information, including instructions for ‘gift donations’ and guidelines with ‘drop off points’ for ‘kids party’ donations is noted on the attached poster.
Thank you for your early help in this big project - please contact me with suggestions/ questions.
Most cordially,
Linda

Welcome to Samui Mala Festival 2009
Welcome to Samui Mala Festival 2009!
I’d like to quote Yann Arthus-Betrand talking about his latest film about the environment Home:
“It’s too late to be pessimistic. Far too late. We are all part of the solution”.
That’s the spirit of this year’s Samui Mala – let’s do what is possible instead of hiding behind our pessimism, our conspiracy theories or our despair. Let this festival be an expression of hope and optimism – it’s going to be a multi-day, multi-venue event with activities and events like Mala beads linking us together in our vision for a green and clean Samui.
The website is still growing but we have activities from September 19 to the final party on September 27. I’ve put in an update below as the site is slower than me… :) I’m very excited how things are panning out so far… the idea to move the mala to appropriate and diverse venues was inspired – the energy is really flowing.
So what’s in it for you?
You have to come and join us to find out:
‘Gorilla marketing’ work day: Thursday 13th August – yes this week!!!
The Samui Film festival this weekend (14-16 August) is supported by the Samui Mala and visa versa – so we are preparing some hand made brochures from recycled card to hand out. We need you to drop by June’s café at the Samui Town Centre any time from 10am to late to help paint the cards.
Plus it’s a nice place to hang out, catch up and have a great meal!
Please support the Samui Film Festival – there are three nights of great movies. www.samuifilmfestival.com
Film festival prize judge: If anyone thinks they are qualified to be a judge on the festival panel please contact me – you will have to see every film. :) The Samui Mala will award a prize (we will plant a tree for the winner).
If you’d like to be a volunteer for the mala and join in organizing or contributing to any of the events for the mala, please let me know so I can put you on the mailing list for a meeting next week.
See you Thursday?
Website development: We would love some help with the website – we want to make it more collaborative and interactive.
We’d like to make a website that lives beyond the event to support our supporters, and to reflect an alternate, fun Samui with interactive, interesting and up to date information.
Anybody out there want to work with us on this? Let me know and we can schedule a time.
Call me anytime: Shelley 0818921180
Summary of Mala events planned so far:
Pre-Mala events
August 14-16 the Samui Film Festival 2009 at Imperial Boat House will focus on environmental education in a fun atmosphere including food, music and community.
September 6-16: A 10 day permaculture course allows participants to collaborate, design and implement these ideas on a site that will be shared with the community during the Samui Mala week.
September 19
Racing for a greener Samui: Just before the Samui Mala, the island is hosting the Koh Samui Trophy, an adventure race including cycling, running, kayaking and swimming. The race while not under the auspices of the Samui Mala, fires the perfect starter’s pistol for a week of pursuing the healthy life, whether personal, or environmental. We will be promoting the Mala at the Ibis for the registration. See www.kohsamuitrophy.com
The organizers have taken pity on Samui and will also put on a beach race of 3, 5 and 9 kilometres for us locals.
September 19 and 20
Racing to unwind: As an antidote to such extreme activity, and as part of the Mala celebrations, local independent and hotel Samui spas are offering an Xtreme Spa promotion weekend for visitors to Samui, for the spouses and friends of the adventure race attendees, and for any ‘survivors’ of the adventure race.
September 20
THA sport day: an inter-hotel sport day is being planned to compete, enjoy a relaxing picnic, raise funds and humiliate the bosses.
Monday, September 21
Yoga and peace day on the UN day of peace. Yoga Thailand (http://www.yoga-thailand.com) will host the yoga program as a "Day of Peace Retreat". This will include guided ashtanga yoga, guided Pranayama basics plus a talk, as well as a discussion on fasting, healing & peace. The day will close with a sunset chant/ meditation on the beach at sunset. A donation for admission will go towards Yoga Thailand’s Centered Foundation charity project (renovating temples and schools in Samui).
Tuesday, Wednesday: We are still networking and inspiring others to take on these days:
There are discussions about a shopping/OTOP/Food walking street in the middle road of Nathon. We are hoping for a ‘green day’ – either a permaculture blitz or a gardening expo. Watch this space! Other ideas are films, garage sale to raise money and encourage ‘retail recycling’. So if you have a bright idea and want to ‘Carpe Diem’ – just be in touch :)
Thursday, September 24
GIDOA (Green Island Dive Operators Association) will host a “Blue Day” to focus on the beach and sea and environmental educational seminars at Kandaburi Resort & Spa. The association is especially preparing a Power Point presentation for educational use in the future which it will show for the first time on this day, and will offer Snorkel and Discover Scuba Lessons/Sessions for children.
Friday, September 25
Healing Forum at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa http://www.kamalaya.com/ will focus on holistic approaches to health of body, mind, spirit and the environment. The day will be titled “Healing ourselves, healing our world. A conversation among friends”. The magnificent Yantra hall at this premier wellness retreat is a superb venue to explore Samui’s role as a healing island, and the relationship between personal and environmental health. Pioneers in the islands health and spiritual history will join and invite anyone interested in the healing arts to participate. The day will also include a taste of healthy foods and drinks from Kamalaya's award winning kitchen. A guided walk with the resort’s architect, an art exhibition for local artists and uplifting and enjoyable entertainment will be another attraction on the day.
Saturday, September 26
Green Kids Day at Blue Water School http://www.bluewatersamui.com/ will focus on environmental education through fun. Children from all communities on the island will spend the day together enjoying activities, films, competitions, song and dance and a chance to become the stewards of the environment they will inherit.
Saturday, September 26
Samui Jazz goes Mala! The Samui Jazz is on the brink of agreeing to support the Samui Mala with co-promotion, and bring share some artists with us. Watch this space!
Sunday, September 27
Samui Mala celebration
Following the success of the last two years’ Samui Mala Celebration the closing party in the beautiful grounds of Tamarind Springs www.tamarindsprings.com will be a fabulous opportunity to celebrate, wrap up and network. Good Luck to Nicky, Creature Comfort Samui!
Whether on a Visa run, holiday, business trip, or simply working long hours, Creature Comfort Samui can help ensure the wellbeing of your pets in the comfort of their own home.
For some dog owners, boarding kennels provide the ideal solution for them and their animal whilst they are away. For others the thought of taking their pets away from their comfort zone and putting them in a strange environment, surrounded by other animals, is not the preferred option".... read more on the website below

As part of this year’s mala festival in late September, the Samui Mala will be holding a Green Kids Day on September 26 which will focus on environmental education and activities and using fun as a way of teaching about sustainability and change.
Blue Water school has kindly offered to host the children’s day on their campus, but the actual day will be organized by Mala volunteers.
Activities will also include kids from other schools on the island.
The day’s activities will be held from around 10.30am – 3.30pm
Activities will include things like:
Seed planting
Tae Kwando
Capaoera
Manora demonstration with class
Paper mache
Bag painting
Recycled art work – to produce an installation
Karate
Yoga
Wall painting
Plastic Fantastic (drums)
Film show
Treasure hunt
June’s tree
We need your help. If you are interested in making this a successful and fun day to inspire, teach and share, we would love you to join us!
Jessica (who organized last year’s entertainment programme at the mala) and Tash have volunteered to organize the day but we need support for them:
Are you interested to help with the overall logistic coordination of the day?
Please join us for a meeting on Friday 10th July at 4pm at June’s café.
Or can you set up a station and supervise an activity?
If you have ideas on what to do, that’s great, or if you want to support someone else’s activity, you are welcome too.
If you can’t make the meeting, but still want to be a volunteer on the day, or support an activity, let me or Jessica know and we can contact you directly.
If you know someone else who would be interested to join the party, please pass this on to them, or have them call one of us

You could save a life!
You may remember that The Rotary Club of Koh Samui (ROCKS) appealed for help in 2007 to set up a Blood Donor Database. At that time there had been two emergencies on the island of Koh Samui , involving massive blood loss. In both cases, the victims were westerners with rare blood groups. The hospitals treating these emergencies did not have a stock of these rare blood groups and had to send out an appeal to Samui residents in the hope of finding a donor. Sadly, the first of the two victims succumbed to his injuries, but the second survived as a donor responded to the appeal in time.
The appeal resulted in a Database of over 35 names and contact details, with many of the participants having rare negative type blood groups. Within a few months, the database was called into use 3 times, saving those lives.
Since that time, participants of the database have moved away from Koh Samui, and other expatriates have joined the community. A recent blood emergency has brought home to us the need to update this valuable resource. So we are asking for you help again!
Ø If your name is on our list already, and you are happy to leave it there, there is no need to respond.
Ø If you know of someone who is on the list and has moved away from Koh Samui, please let us know.
Ø Those of you who wish to join with this vital project and have not done so already, please contact Adele @ ROCKS for a questionnaire and return it to rockstreasurer@rotarysamui.org
Ø If you do not know your blood type, ROCKS plans to hold a Blood Testing Day in conjunction with Thai International Hospital on 16th March between 1000 and 1500.
Please note that names and contact details will be stored in confidence by the hospitals of Koh Samui, and will not used for any other purpose other than an emergency appeal.
Thanks

Meeting at Ibis Hotel April 2009
WBN are honoured to link & support the ladies however we are able to, with their incredible project
This is the information that Roz & Emma discussed with us:
In September this year our mainstream school, Samui Centre of Learning will be moving to new purpose built premises. Our current location will then be re-opened as a centre for children on Samui with special educational needs. Our aim for the centre is provide a place that can help learners with special needs achieve the greatest possible personal self-sufficiency and success in school and the community. There is currently very little help or support for these children and their families on Samui and with this in mind we are now in the process of setting up a non-profit organization, so that any family regardless of financial background or social standing can have access to the education and care that every child deserves.
Our charity, which will be called the Samui Learning Centre for Special Educational Needs, will be opened with the support of both the National Association for people with Autism and The Khun Poom Foundation. We have secured free training for specialist teachers and are in talks with health care professionals to put together a team who will take into consideration every aspect of the children’s well being. In addition to the support of the two above mentioned foundations we also have the support of the local government in particular Khun Pong, Samui’s Deputy Major and they have pledged 150,000THB for the school in this year’s budget with the promise of more funding next year.
On the 16th of March this year the first phase of the school was opened; a social group within the current school location where the parents and children can meet each day, use the school resources and facilities and join in with the mainstream school for some activities such as reading with friends and assemblies. As founders of our international school and founders of our charitable school, there is a common link that prevails, providing the best possible education for every child. With our extensive background in working with children from all walks of life and varying needs, we are equipped with the knowledge to identify these needs and help in every way possible. As our international school has now been running for over 5 years, we feel that we have the trust of the local community and provide a stable example of our commitment to education.
When the centre for special needs is fully operational, the main aim between our two schools is to provide a program for inclusion and later a full scholarship to attend our mainstream school. The success of a program like this requires a visionary leadership of school administrators, an effective collaboration of everyone involved with students with special needs, a well-planned program and a consistent implementation of the program across time. Given appropriate intervention in early life, specialized education and structured support, a child can be helped to maximize their skills and achieve their full potential in a mainstream setting.
The support we have received so far has been amazing, however we strongly believe that if the centre is to be a success it must be sustainable for the long term, not something here today and gone tomorrow. We are now working on raising the funds that can help the centre achieve its goal of becoming a well resourced, permanent educational facility on Koh Samui.
Samui Centre of Learning is co-owned by Roz Thomson, Emma Dyas and Dr Julie Skinner.
